Do you know there are 5 model numbers for each of iPhone 14 series? No, I’m not talking color or storage or the series (Pro, Pro Max, Plus or normal) here. But rather, I’m talking about model number that affects 5G connectivity. Take for example, iPhone 14 Pro Max Deep Purple color 1TB version has 5 model numbers, each is marketed for different regions. So you have to ensure you are buying the correct model of iPhone intended for your region. Because otherwise, if you fail to do so, e.g.: buying iPhone intended for other region, you may not have the full range of 5G bands intended for your region or country of residence. The worst impact is that, you can’t use the 5G connectivity or have intermittent 5G connectivity and / or instead forced to use 4G LTE connectivity. So, watch out when you are buying iPhone 14, especially if you are not buying on the official channel (e.g.: From Apple Store or Apple Authorized Reseller).

Some notable differences among iPhone models across countries

Some other reasons why you want to get the correct model number for your country of residence are these.

Hardware differences:

  • US iPhone supports the most 5G bands, including the 5G mmWave. US iPhone has some plastic portion on the right side of the phone, below the Power (Side) button.
  • China, Hong Kong and Macau iPhone contains physical dual SIM, but doesn’t support as many 5G bands as what US iPhone has.

Software differences:

  • US iPhone comes with all Apple built-in apps, such as Apple TV and Apple News.
  • China iPhone does not have Apple TV nor Apple News.
  • Russia model comes with Apple TV but not Apple News.

Unlike hardware differences, software differences are (typically) depending on your Apple ID account country of registration, so if – for example, you want to have Apple News and Apple TV on your iPhone, ensure you are logged (or registered) in US Apple ID.

Here’s how to find the Model number

There are a few ways you can find the Model Number for your iPhone 14 series: 1) If you can turn on the iPhone and 2) If you can’t turn on the iPhone yet.

If you can turn on the iPhone:

1) Go to Settings > General > About.

2) Under Model Name, you should be able to see Model Number. Tap on Model Number to reveal the Model Number which starts with “AXXXX” where “XXXX” is the numerical sequence Apple uniquely gives to each iPhone model (E.g.: iPhone 14 Model Number will have different model number than iPhone 14 Pro).

If you can’t turn on the iPhone yet, because the seller doesn’t allow you to do so:

1) Remove the SIM tray from the iPhone (If your iPhone comes with SIM card slot).

2) Peek inside the upper side of SIM tray slot, you should be able to see the Model Number is on the upper side.

Bring it all together

So after reading the facts above, now you should know although the iPhone 14 physically looks the same, but inside, they are different. Different region / countries have different Model Number which resulting different 5G Bands and hardware features.

My recommendation is to always buy iPhone 14 series from the official channel, especially if you are buying brand new. If you are buying second hand, then you have to take note on the Model Number as stated above to ensure you are getting the correct iPhone 14 model.
