In between amaze and confuse, mix them together, that’s what I feel when first time (and subsequently) seeing Singapore road directional signs. Don’t get me wrong, they are all good in shape, consistent in color, plate size and text size, and they are clearly placed so that no driver is going to miss them during traveling.
But Singapore does use a lot of acronyms or abbreviations (in fact all of them) – like what you see on the image above – when it comes to show direction for their expressway. As a tourist or new comer, when you first touch down at Singapore Changi Airport then go out traveling to city via taxi, bus or any other land transportation, except train, you’ll see something like PIE, ECP, CTE on your way from airport to city.

For those who curious what are the acronyms/abbreviations for all the 3-character expressway wording on Singapore directional signs, here they are:

Number of Expressway in Singapore
Just in case you didn’t count them, there are 11 expressway in Singapore up to 2017 where 10 is fully operational and 1, which is NSE, is still under construction and plan to be opened only in 2020.
Undersea Expressway in Singapore
Singapore has it’s undersea expressway. It’s the MCE along the Marina Bay area. Unfortunately, you won’t see any fish or any underwater sightings as the expressway was fully built on concrete and not glass.
Tunnel Expressway in Singapore
Singapore also has it’s tunnel expressway, it’s called KPE – Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway. In fact KPE holds the longest below ground road tunnel in Southeast Asia.
If you are tourist and traveling to Singapore, make sure to ask the uncle taxi driver to drive you to KPE to see how big and long KPE is!
